The journey of establishing Mercy Specialist Hospital, Ahiaeke started in 1995 when two of orphans from our compassion home for orphans and abandoned children suddenly took ill and was taken to Federal Medical Centre (Ramat Specialist Hospital then), Umuahia for treatment. Unfortunately, on reaching there, it was discovered that the staff of Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia were on an industrial strike and all efforts made for the kids to receive prompt medical attention proved abortive. The delay led to the death of these babies who needed fluid replacement (rehydration) at that particular time.
This painful experience devastated Sr. Bibiana Ogbonnaya, who was the Matron of the Home then. Sr. Bibiana was in dilemma of what to do to prevent a repeat of what happened. It was at this point that our cherished friends and benefactors, Hans and Dagmar, a couple from Germany who also witnessed the incident allayed Sister’s fear by promising to look for sponsors to set up a clinic very close to the orphanage.
As soon as Hans and Dagma got back to their home in Germany, they found a sponsor in the person of Tony Kelin who responded immediately and sponsored provision of all the materials and everything needed to complete the building for the clinic. The building was completed within three months. It is good to state here, that the contractor who was an Anglican got converted to Catholic Church on witnessing this kind of magnanimity.
On the 20th day of January 1996, the clinic was officially opened by His Lordship Bishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, the then Catholic Bishop of Umuahia Diocese.
The clinic was given the name Compassion Home Clinic and was dedicated to Mary Mother of Mercy. This name was later changed to Mater Infirmorum (Mary Health of the Sick) Comprehensive Health Centre when it was registered as a Health institution with Abia State Ministry of Health. The Clinic was meant to take care of the health needs of the children and adults not only those in the orphanage but as well as sick children and adults far and beyond the environs.
Between the years 2015 and 2019, the building was renovated (without the loss of the design of the original plan) to accommodate other specialist services. The renovation was successfully completed through the efforts of our sisters; Sr. Cordelia Ihekoronye, Sr. Laura Jovita Nwokeocha, Sr. Obiomachim Umeh) who were working at the hospital then and their dedicated staff especially Dr. Godson C. Alozie with the support of Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy congregation and Architect Edward Nkwegu and his company.
After renovation of the building, Mathias-stiftung Germany (Ibbenbüren, Rheine und Methingen) donated hospital beds and medical equipments through Dr. Eunice Igwe (Sr. Chiamaka Igwe) who works there. The hospital also got some donations of hospital equipment from friends and well wishers of Dr. Eunice Igwe. After equipping the hospital with relevant hospital materials, the hospital was upgraded to run some specialist health care services.
The Mercy Specialist Hospital Ahiaeke, Umuahia which was build by the DMMM Congregation and solemnly blessed by Most Rev. Dr. L. I. Ugorji, the then bishop of Umuahia diocese was commissioned by Dr. John Ahukanna, the commissioner for Health, Abia State on the 15th day of August 2018 and on the 14th of August, 2019 it was officially registered with Abia State ministry of health.
